My favourite combination when fishing our offshore reefs is the Shimano Calcutta 700 Multiplier reel spooled with 10kg Platinum line and coupled with the Shimano TLD Special graphite composite rod.
My preferred method of angling with this combo is casting lightly weighted or unweighted Pilchards (or well presented whole Squid) and 'Floating' the bait down while thumbing the spool in search of Snapper. The rod is light and sensitive, loads up quickly when setting the hooks and has plenty of grunt when I encounter large pelagics such as Spanish Mackerel, Cobia or Yellowfin Tuna which are common in our waters.
The reel is a delight to use with a super smooth and very positive operation, allowing me to cast an unweighted Pilchard a considerable distance with ease and an excellent state of the art drag system to handle that heavy hit. The level wind, which is always engaged and follows the lay of the line, is a definite advantage with this style of angling, eliminating the chance of over-runs when you get slammed by a 'steam train'.
