| There were plenty of Mackerel Tuna working in the bay this week but in amongst them were a few quality Northern Bluefins, as Canberra visitor Steve Lawler (below left) found early on Wednesday morning. Steve was out at Jew Shoal with friends and apart from boating a number of Snapper, hooked up with this 9.5kg 'Longtail'. He was armed with a Penn Mariner rod and a Penn 330GTi reel loaded with 15kg line. His troll rig? A whole Pilchard on a Davo's Spaniard Special. | |

| And local yak angler Ian Tagg (above right) made a spectacular debut in the bay on his Swing 'Angler' kayak yesterday morning, catching and releasing eight Mackerel Tuna before finally hooking and boating the 8.5kg Northern Bluefin Tuna he's posing with. Kitted out with a Penn rod, an Okuma Epix 60 reel and 15lb line, he was casting a 35gm metal slug. | |
| While the pelagics are on the
boil it's too easy to sometimes overlook the fact that there's plenty of
quality reef fish to target at this time of the year. Ignoring the 'boils'
on Saturday morning, local angler Josh 'Yogi' Dewit (right) floated down
a whole Squid bait on 2x8/0 hooks out on Sunshine Reef and nailed this 5.5kg
Coral Trout. Michael Gregg from Sunshine Beach (below) was out at Sunshine Reef on Saturday with his buddies David Clark and Ben Nothling when they got onto a school of Spanish Mackerel. Between them they caught four Spaniards, with Michael's 14kg specimen being the standout. He was using a Fenwick rod, a Penn Senator reel and 10kg line. ![]() |
