OFFSHORE: The winds this week were harder to pick than a broken nose, varying in strength from very light, to a blustery howler, and back again, coming in turns from North East to South West, with every other Westerly variation in between. Consequently, conditions were subject to change without too much notice, although fortunately the weekend was fishable, and the last two days of the month were almost perfect. Squire, Maori Cod, Parrot Fish, Pearl Perch and Moses Perch were common to the visited reefs. In addition, Double Island Point, when it fired, produced a range of catches including thumper Knobbys (to 8kg), Red Emperor, Cobia, Sweetlip, Longtail (in numbers) and Mack Tuna and, pictured left, quality Rosy Jobfish. Sunshine Reef was the spot for Coral Trout and Sweetlip and North Reef rewarded those prepared to put in the time, yielding Snapper and Longtail (Northern Bluefin) Tuna.

Scott Miers, above, from Banyo, Qld., used a live Yakka to tempt this hard fighting monster 8.5kg Rosy Jobfish (King Snapper) on Saturday's Cougar 'I' trip to Double Island Point. Scott was armed with a Pioneer rod and an Okuma reel. Squire, Sweetlip, Moses Perch, Mack and Longtail Tuna plus more Rosy Jobfish made up the rest of the catch. And on the right we have a good example of the Longtail Tuna that have been hitting the floaters at the reefs over the last few weeks. This 8kg specimen, boated by Tweed Heads visitor Kane O'Rourke, was taken on a full day Cougar 'I' charter to Double Island Point last Tuesday week. Kane was using a Wilson Live Fibre rod, a Shimano Speedmaster reel, 30lb line and live Slimy Mackerel.

ONSHORE: Not a lot of feedback from the beach anglers this week although the rocks at the Northern end of Sunshine Beach did yield some quality Swallowtail Dart and South of the surf club produced Tailor at night to 2.5kg. On the North Shore the Tailor were going for Bonito and whole Sauri baits. The gutters between the 2nd and 3rd cuttings and opposite the Cherry Venture saw most of the action with the odd thumper Greenback taken along with the Choppers. The river mouth yielded Chopper Tailor, and a few Luderick made sporadic appearances at the car park rocks. Trevally were down in numbers but up in size with the Woods Bays, Harbourtown and the first ski run working best. With the water in the system still very clear, best results have been from dusk till dawn as with most other species. Flathead, Bream and Whiting were taken from Munna Point up to and into Lakes Weyba and Cooroibah. Hairtail on lures continue to be the surprise catch in the lower estuary system with the Woods Bays producing most of this week's action. It's nice to see that mostly the good eating and environmentally correct size Flathead are being weighed in these days with the larger females (2kg to 2.2kg+) being released to the benefit of the fish stocks. Eddie Chaplin, left, from New South Wales was pleased with the 1.5kg specimen he landed at Munna Bridge last Tuesday week. Eddie was about an hour too late to get into last week's report so here he is now. He was using a Shakespeare rod, an Abu 475 closed face reel and Mullet fillet for bait. Interestingly enough the 'Lizard' that John Phillips, right, is holding is only 285gms heavier so it does go to show that it's all in the way you present to the camera. John did well considering his Silstar Power Tip rod/Abu 6500 reel combo was only loaded with 1kg line and no trace! He did admit that he was lucky to hook the fish in the lip with his No.2 longshank, and yes, it took a fair bit of time and patience to boat.
