THE NOOSA 'FAMILY FISHING CLASSIC' ROUNDUP June 9th - 12th 2000
The weather may not have been absolutely perfect this year but it didn't deter roughly 700 anglers from competing in the twelfth annual Noosa 'Family Fishing Classic'. A good many entrants braved the cold conditions and made the most of the dusk till dawn opportunities on Friday night, ahead of a predicted swing to strong very wet South Easterlies by midday Saturday. No one was too surprised, either, when those fish leading the field by end of the weigh-in on Saturday, with the exception of the Bream, went on to take out the major prizes. The live weigh-in, set up on the river bank opposite Davo's Bait and Tackle, proved very popular with entrants and spectators alike, particularly as this year the Flathead were designated strictly catch and release. A grand total of 110 'Lizards' were returned to the estuary over the long weekend plus a mixed bag of 50 Bream, Trevally, Whiting and even the odd Tailor.

There was an extended round of applause when popular local angler and Davo's sponsored 'Teewah Fishing Team' member Dave 'Sterny' Sternberg weighed in this 4.975kg thumper Greenback Tailor on Saturday afternoon. Some were applauding the perseverance of 'Sterny' and his mates who've been working towards a major win over the last couple of years. Others were acknowledging the impressive and eventually unbeatable proportions of the Greenback Tailor he arrived with. 'Sterny' pulled this $2000.00 fish out of the surf just above Teewah on the North Shore around 6.45pm on Friday night. He and the other members of the team had reconnoitered and marked likely gutters and holes the day before and this particular spot paid off handsomely after three casts and on the first strike! 'Sterny' was armed with a SnyderGlas 'Regal' surf rod, a Penn 8500SS threadline reel, 25lb 'Super 100' main line and 70lb mono trace. His bait was Bonito fillet on 3x6/0 hooks, supplied by Davo's, of course.
