THE NOOSA 'FAMILY FISHING CLASSIC' ROUNDUP June 9th - 12th 2000

The Jewfish weigh-in is always a much anticipated event and even more so this year with weather conditions about to turn rough not long into the competition, threatening to fill in the holes and gutters

favoured by these thumper fish. The result was a scramble to get a result as early on as possible, which is exactly what Sunrise angler John Stitz managed by 1am on Saturday morning.
John, an accomplished Tailor fisherman, had marked a likely looking gutter at Alexandria Bay and worked it for nearly seven hours before getting his one and only strike at 1am on Saturday. A strip of Mullet on a 5/0 hook tempted this 16.2kg prize winner and it was the only hit John had throughout the night. The fish took 20 minutes to land as he was using an old surf rod of unknown origin and an Alvey 7" reel loaded with 15lb line to a wire trace. The closest challenge to John's fish was 11kg short of the goods, a fact which persuaded most other hopefuls to switch species.

Young John Hinds, left, hit the jackpot down around Noosa Sound on Saturday morning when his live Prawn bait on a Tru Turn hook attracted the 2.135kg Trevally that didn't even come close to being beaten all weekend. John was armed with a Jarvis Walker spin combo loaded with 6lb line and trace.

The Bream on the right wasn't weighed in until Monday afternoon and at 1.57kg it was well ahead of the 0.92kg specimen it bumped off the top spot. Brisbane angler Tony Ciancio landed his $2000.00 prize fish near the Fairy Pools off the National Park rocks on Sunday afternoon. He was using an 8ft rod with a Shimano Baitrunner 6500 reel loaded with 30lb Spiderwire. His bait? A large live Yabby on a 4/0 hook.
