| When Brisbane angler Jason Degn, right, weighed in this 3.66kg prize winning Trevally on Monday afternoon he found he was competing with himself, bettering his previous day's submission by a comfortable 640gms. He's no stranger to the 'Classic' either, winning this category back in 1998 with a 3.9kg specimen and also taking out the prize for the top weight Tailor in 1996. Jason landed this thumper out 'around the headland' of the Noosa National Park. He said if he had to get any more specific he'd have to kill me. He was using a Headlander custom rod and an Alvey 700 reel loaded with 20lb Schneider line and 60lb Jinkai trace. His bait? Whole Yellowtail Pike on 4x8/0 gangs. | ![]() |
| The new location for the 'Classic', smack on the river just down from the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club has been a real boon for spectators and contestants alike with plenty to see and do in very pleasant surroundings. The weather, too, played its part this year with great fishing conditions putting all categories under threat until the last day and making for a nail biter of a competition. The winning Bream, at 1.64kg, was 70gms bigger than last year's top weight but with some real thumpers having been landed by anglers lately, one in fact tipping the scales at 2.04kg a couple of weeks ago, it was up for grabs right until the whistle blew. Tewantin angler Doug McKenzie, however, seemed pretty laid back about it all and accepted his $2000.00 cash and prize reward very calmly. Doug landed this quality fish at Sunshine Beach around 2.30pm on Sunday. He was armed with a Shimano 'Bullwhip' spin combo loaded with 7kg line and trace. The bait that did the deed was Pippie on a 2/0 longshank. | ![]() |
