| THE 1998 'FAMILY FISHING CLASSIC' ROUNDUP (PAGE TWO) |
Hooly
Dooly! This isn't the biggest Jewfish weighed in at the 'Classic' over the
years but don't they always
look impressive. This fish would feed a few families anyway. Paul Grenfell
was a happy man when he hooked this 13.85kg prize winner on only his second
cast out near Hell's Gates at 9.30am on Saturday morning. What was even
more interesting was that earlier he'd been chasing up some live bait and
had only managed to catch one solitary Yellowtail Pike, and you guessed
it, that's all he needed to tempt this Jewie and pick up the $2500.00 prize.
Paul was using a 4.15m Butterworth Graphite surf rod and an Alvey 600B reel
loaded with 30lb line and trace. The Pike was dangling on an 8/0 suicide
hook. |
Well,
this has got to be the biggest Tailor seen around these parts for many a
long year, and in fact it's a
competition record! A 5.928kg Tailor is a major adversary in anyone's book
and initially Barry Swenson of Tewantin thought he'd hooked up on a Jewfish,
his target species. Barry was another wise angler who headed for the National
Park, this time Alexandria Bay, straight for a likely gutter he'd located
earlier on Friday morning. He was set up with a Butterworth Fish Hunter
surf rod and an Alvey 650 reel loaded with 15lb line. His 80lb Tortue trace
was terminated with opposing Gamagatsu hooks (8/0 and 6/0) well bedded into
a Bonito fillet. Just in case there was an even bigger specimen out there
Barry went back to the same spot the next night but the best he could come
up with was a Tailor of 4.5kg. Tch, tch. |
