THE 1998 'FAMILY FISHING CLASSIC' ROUNDUP
It's interesting that many of the winners were targeting one particular species and landed the winner of another category. Barry Swenson was after a Jewfish and picked up the top Tailor, Jason Degn was going for Tailor and picked up the best Trevally, and Jason Hein was after a Jewfish and landed this prize winning Flathead. That, of course, is the sign of a good angler, handling the unexpected and coming through with the goods. Jason's well known around Noosa for his catch and release policy, especially when it comes to the larger Flathead. In this case, however, he was too far out on the National Park coastline and the fish unfortunately didn't survive the trip back. Saturday morning, at Granite Bay, was when Jason landed his prize winning 3.93kg fish and no one was more surprised than he was to hook up a Flathead off the rocky perch he'd set himself up on. He was using a McGinn 8kg Baitcaster rod and an Abu 5 Star reel loaded with 8kg Tortue line. His 20kg trace came in handy as he had to haul the fish up and onto the rocks and you only get one shot at that. His bait was a small Yakka on 3x5/0 ganged hooks. Flathead

Alan Hobden from Palmwoods on the Sunshine Coast took out the prize for the biggest Bream with this absolute monster that weighed in at 1.91kg. He landed this boomer at about 5.30am on Sunday morning up on the North Shore. He was just opposite the Wilderness Camping Ground and not far North of the 'Third Cutting' when he hooked his $2500.00 fish. As of Saturday night the best Bream weight was 1.7kg, considered at the time to be unbeatable, until Alan turned up at the Sunday weigh-in. He was using a surf rod, of course, but of such age that it's origin escapes him. His reel was a Butterworth Challenger and his bait was whole Pilchard on 3x4/0 ganged hooks. It's hard to believe but this wasn't quite a record beater, falling short by roughly 15gms. Bream

Other winners and grinners were:

Whiting:
B. Organ from Ormistone - Weight: 0.594kg $2500.00 cash and prizes.

Dart:
S. Fitzpatrick from Nambour - Weight: 0.754kg $2500.00 cash and prizes.

$10,000.00 Boat, Motor and Trailer Package:
Draw Winner H. Spooner from Strathpine.
