| THE 1999 'FAMILY FISHING CLASSIC' ROUNDUP |
Well, the eleventh annual Noosa 'Family Fishing Classic' ended on Monday the 14th of June 1999 and as
you can see by the photo on the right, the weather during the three day
event was absolutely superb. Over eight hundred entrants contested for
the top prizes, but with a host of giveaways and daily mystery weight
prizes for all species, plus extra bonus prizes for the catch and release
section, it'd be hard to find a loser. In fact the runner-up to the draw
for the $10,000 boat package had a smile on his face when retiring event
organiser David Pope and his partner Tanya Coyne donated a second boat
prize. A very nice parting gesture. |
| Once
the sun was up it was great sunbaking weather but after dark the temperatures
plummeted, testing the resolve of even the most dedicated anglers. But,
as you can see, the rewards were certainly there for those who persevered.
Grant Donaldson from Caloundra just kept hammering away at the beach gutters
near Double Island Point all weekend. He was after the winning Tailor
and the closest he'd come to the top weight 3.27kg fish was 2.5kg. Grant
didn't give up though and his determination was rewarded when at 2.30am
on Monday morning this 3.822kg Greenback took a fancy to his Squid bait
on a 9/0 hook. Then it was all over bar the shouting, and there was plenty
of that. He was armed, appropriately, with an Angler 'Greenback' surf
rod and, of course, the ever popular Alvey 700 reel loaded with 21lb Platil
line and 80lb trace. This was Grant's first entry in the competition but
you can bet it won't be his last. Cash and prizes to the value of $2500
ain't a bad reward for doing what you love. |
