The December Fishing Report
As at Tuesday 7th December 1999

OVERVIEW:
With predominantly 10 to 15 knot variable Easterlies and swells at 1.2 to 1.5 metres there wasn't a day this week that could be classified as unfishable, even though at times conditions were a little bit lumpy.

OFFSHORE: Double Island Point was the spot for quality Red Emperor and Rosy Jobfish plus Maori Cod, Moses and Scarlet Sea Perch, Squire and Honeycomb Cod. North Reef produced Pearl, Moses and Scarlet Sea Perch, Snapper, Parrot Fish, Sweetlip and Teraglin Jew while Chardon's Reef yielded Cobia, Maori Cod, Squire, Gold Spot Wrasse, Moses Perch, Parrot Fish and Mowong. Pearl Perch, Squire, Rosy Jobfish and quality Parrot Fish came from the Barwon Banks and Sunshine Reef yielded Coral Trout, Maori Cod, Sweetlip, Parrot Fish, Pearl and Moses Perch, Mowong and Spotted Mackerel.

ONSHORE:
The tides were favourable from Friday on and there were some quality Tailor taken from the beach gutters on the North Shore as dusk coincided with the high. The estuary also livened up with Whiting and Flathead leading the pack and the mouth of lakes Cooroibah and Weyba to the river mouth working well for both species. Trevally catches (to 1.5kg) came from the Tewantin boat ramp area and the Woods Bays but the bigger (2.5kg+) specimens, although still working the bait schools, showed little interest in lures or live baits. For the sports anglers, Giant Herring made a showing at the mouth of Lake Cooroibah, and Tarpon (to 3kg) were going for flys in the Woods Bays. Most of the Mangrove Jack action was in the Tewantin ski run area and up between the lakes, with live baits working best.

Judging by those smiles there's no doubt these blokes had a great time on Thursday's full day trip to Double Island Point on Cougar'I'. Ross Weigel (left) came up with the top weight Rosy Jobfish, also known as King Emperor or King Snapper. At 8.4kg, this is pretty much as big as this species gets, although on the right John Keen also did very well with his 6kg specimen.

David McLaren (centre) from Adelaide was a very happy man after he boated this 8.765kg Red Emperor. David not only scored a quality fish banquet, he also won the Davo's 'Fish of the Week' prize when he weighed this beauty in across the road at the end of the day. Ross and David were using Gary Howard rods with Alvey reels. John's combo was a Penn 330GTi.
In the background is deckie Adi 'Kiwi' Rouse, cleaning and filleting the rest of the catch.

We stuck our necks out a few weeks ago and predicted the appearance of Coral Trout on the report within the next month, so it's a relief to see them start to turn up.
To make it even better, it's from Sunshine Reef which is definitely showing more life.
Paul Waite did the honours with the first Trout weigh-in of the season and at 4.735kg it's a very nice fish.
Paul headed out to Sunshine on Saturday morning with nothing more complicated than a 70lb handline, and besides this colourful specimen, boated Maori Cod and Parrot Fish.
He was using Pilchards on 3x5/0 gangs.
With quality Red Emperor putting in a strong showing it looks like the reports over the next few months will have a definite reddish tinge.
