Compared to earlier last month, Laguna Bay has been very quiet lately with the bait boils just a fond memory and hopes of a big pelagic hookup wishful thinking. Having said that, keen angler (and Noosa Blue Water Charters crew member) Adam Howe got the surprise of his life when jigging for Yakkas at Hall's Reef last Thursday. Armed with a 4kg McGinn rod and a Shimano Calcutta 100 reel loaded with 10lb Fireline, Adam was bringing in a 'just hooked' Yakka on a 1/0 Mustad when it was monstered by this 14kg Spanish Mackerel. Excellent effort on such light gear. Spanish Mackerel

The local yak anglers were out in Laguna Bay over the weekend and reported catches of Tailor and Squire from the National Park point breaks (on trolled shallow divers), Northern Bluefin Tuna (hooked but not boated) in Granite Bay, plus Mackerel Tuna and (on the right) the odd quality Snapper out around Jew Shoal. Bill 'Billybob' Watson was trolling for Spaniards on the 'Shoal' on Saturday morning when this 4.8kg 'Knobby' took a fancy to his whole Bonito bait. He was using a Wilson Live Fibre rod and a Shimano TSS4 reel loaded with 30lb line. Snapper
