OFFSHORE:
Wet South/South Easterlies gusting to 30 knots and a swell of 2.5 to 3 metres restricted offshore activity to the shelter of Laguna Bay for the first half of the week. Fortunately the situation improved by Saturday when the winds dropped back to 10 to 15 knot variable Southerlies and the bar crossing became pretty much a stroll over, especially around high tide. With the swell out wide holding at 1.5 metres, offshore was certainly fishable, if a bit lumpy.
  Kokoda Lures

The visited reefs produced Squire, Snapper, Parrot Fish and Moses Perch. In addition, Chardon's Reef yielded Pearl Perch, Teraglin Jewfish and Estuary Cod, at North Reef it was Hussar, Mackerel Tuna and quality Sweetlip while some good size Coral Trout came in from Sunshine Reef. In Laguna Bay the hot run of Spotty Mackerel, Longtail and Mack Tuna continued without a break throughout most of the week with the schools working quite close to the shore. This resulted in anglers nailing all three of the above mentioned species around high tide while fishing from the middle groyne on Main Beach.
On the right we have a fresh, live and kicking 4kg+ Bar-Cheeked or Island Trout. This fish was boated last Monday on a Cougar 'I' charter to Sunshine Reef but didn't make it into last week's report due to lack of time and space. In this pic, skipper Sam 'Slammer' Ladd is either: (a) showing how the Trout shapes its jaws to attack a bait fish, (b) proving that he's got a much, much bigger mouth or (c) laughing at a wise crack from one of the crew. He can't remember as it was such a hectic outing, with this Trout just jumping on one of the floater rigs put out for pelagics. Sam had to grab the unattended Penn Power Stick/Shimano Baitrunner 6500 combo and land the fish himself as everyone else was occupied. The bait? Slimy Mackerel.

ONSHORE: The only beach action was on the North Shore with Dart and Bream coming from above Teewah. The Woods Bays fired up this week with Trevally (average 1kg) and Chopper Tailor (average 1.5kg) in good numbers if not size. Tilsan and Producer minnows, Epoxy baitfish flies and Raider slugs all worked well there. Flathead were concentrated towards the river mouth (as were the Bream) with Hardy Heads producing good results on the drift. The sand dredge operation at the Woods Point was the best option for Whiting which were going for any live baits such as Worms, Prawns or Yabbies.

Left, Sunshine beach angler Pete Smout was in the Woods Bay on Tuesday when the waters boiled for about an hour and a half. Casting a Tilsan Minnow lure he landed three Tailor (to 1.4kg) and a couple of Trevally (to 950gm) using a Spider Pro rod, a Daiwa Regal 2000 reel and 6lb line.
And Suellen Philpott, Tewantin, nailed herself a quality 1.755kg Bream on the North Shore on Sunday. Suellen was armed with an Ugly Stik and a Shimano FX4000 reel. Her bait was Pippy.
