| There were still a few Snapper
working in-close this week as newbie local yak angler Alex Keifer (right)
discovered when he took his first ever paddle out to Jew Shoal on Thursday.
Trolling a Davo's Slimy Mackerel
behind his Perception Swing Angler
kayak, Alex hooked up with this 1.65kg specimen on his second troll run.
He was armed with a Shakespeare Ugly Stik and a Daiwa 5000 Regal Z reel
loaded with 25lb Platinum line. His troll rig was the ever faithful Davo's
Spaniard/Snapper special. And Fred Kelly from Sunrise Beach (below) was another angler who worked the close-in reefs this week and reaped the rewards. Fred was out at Sunshine Reef on Thursday afternoon when the 2.8kg Snapper he's pictured with hit his live Rainbow Runner bait. He was kitted out with a Penn 320GTi combo loaded with 40lb line. ![]() |

As we mentioned
earlier, North Reef was again firing well this week with the two most
prolific species currently on the bite well represented. On the left we have 14 year old Hannah Armstrong from Brisbane who boated this 2kg Snapper while on a half day Cougar Too charter to North Reef on Wednesday. She was kitted out with a Wilson Live Fibre custom rod and an Alvey 825C reel loaded with 30lb Pioneer Flexline. And Cobia, otherwise known as Black Kingfish, have been in excellent numbers on most of the close and mid range reefs for the last month or more. On the same Cougar Too charter, Andy Melvin (right) from Cromwell in New Zealand tempted this 12kg specimen with a Pilchard bait. She was kitted out with a Shakespeare Ugly Stick rod and a Shimano TSS4 reel loaded with 8kg line. |
